TRY THIS Working with the Neck

Tightening your neck muscles can provide support if someone is attempting to choke you. Anna has often heard her instructors joking that in their multigenerational jiu-jitsu training family, if someone even looks at their neck, or if they are going in for a hug, they automatically tighten their neck muscles. Tensing and releasing muscle groups also happens to be a coping skill we outlined for you in Chapter 4. If you have any physical limitations or injuries in your neck, you can instead practice progressive muscle relaxation on a different muscle group that honors your body’s needs.

If it works for your body, we invite you to try tensing and releasing your neck muscles. It might be tricky at first for some of you to find those muscles. In order to find and sense those neck muscles we can attempt to

move the head slightly backward

look down slightly, and

pull the chin back in toward the neck
